Let's make this simple: I wanted a desktop writing app that let me do everything I needed to do for my stories in one place and with no A.I, subscriptions, or focus on businesses. Write, edit, store, and plan, plan, plan. So I built this app that catered to my multi-media workflow, that was visual with room for simple writing, that was built around a need to jump around different stories, plot out ideas, and reference every single thing. It's an app for writers, idea-people, artists, creatives, and anyone who could use a space to be messy in. That's the gist. Monroe is for anyone who wants to make something.

STORIES MATTER

No A.I, no subscriptions, no online anything. I've intentionally kept the branding light and the workspace clean (without being insanely minimalistic) so you can get lost in your own worlds. Everything has a tooltip, mostly everything can be collapsed, and it's all catered to giving you a writing and planning environment that you own.

What makes Monroe a worthwhile purchase for creatives?

Monroe is for people who write a lot of stories and need help organizing them in one place. It's attractive and expansive, but you should use the writing tool that helps you get the THING done. It's also going to be fairly cheap ($20) and will come with both the Mac and Windows versions.

Can I import my existing stories?

Sure. Monroe supports importing for Docx and rtf files and sports a cute bulk uploader. Markdown and other types will be available after the open beta.

Is Monroe suitable for all types of writing?

Yeah, of course. You can write whatever you want in Monroe. You can even code (though you can't run it). Monroe allows you to plan out stories of all kinds. If it has a character or is written in text, hey, you're in there.

Does Monroe have collaboration features?

No, but it has an easy-to-export database that can be downloaded and sent to anyone. The point of Monroe is a more personal experience. If there's enough desire for it during the open beta, maybe it'll show up on the roadmap.

Will my data be secure?

Yes. Your data is as secure as your own PC is since Monroe doesn't connect to anything.

When will Monroe be fully released?

Monroe is currently in open beta testing. Full release is planned for December 2025 or January 2026, with ongoing feature updates throughout the year.

FEATURES

There's no point in a writing app without a writing editor. Monroe has a fast, comprehensive editor with your standard formatting tools (and a few surprises for ease of use). The writing editors are also featured in books and games to allow for writing and planning your work in one place. Journals allow you to work out your stress on the page without leaving the rest of your work.

MONROE BETA

Be among the first to experience Monroe (in all its glory and flaws) and help shape this experience. The beta period will run from November 24th until January. If it seems like the app needs more work than can be reasonably done in that time, it'll soft launch and continue in Open Beta until February.

Hey. I'm Trey Briggs, a writer, terrible programmer, and 3D generalist. Sometimes, eh, I consider myself an indie game dev and micro-site creator as well. In general, I make things that I think are cool or important or whatever the hell else. I make worlds, I flesh out characters, and I sit in my head all day. I have a professional life since my stories don't make any money and I'd starve otherwise, but maybe one day I'll do something cool.

In another world, I am the creative director of Studio Wolfless, a fiction site for paranormal horror, comics, etc with a focus on Black characters. In the context of the Monroe Writing App, I am a writer with too many ideas that made a thing to keep those ideas together. Unfortunately, I will continue to make things.
